Burlesque by Jazzercise

I was in the mood for something different, you know to shake up my routine of weights and the treadmill, when I came across Burlesque by Jazzercise. It certainly is different from my regular workouts and a heck of a lot of fun. By the time this workout was finished, my inner showgirl was front and center. And I was a little sweaty too. 🙂

Burlesque by Jazzercise combines sassy, sexy and flirty dance movements to create one fierce and fun cardio workout. These showgirl-inspired moves will have you feeling confident as you pop your booty and strut your way across your living room. Warning, your inner vixen will come out but that’s okay, because she’s going to be burning some serious calories. The music is fun, the choreography isn’t too complicated. If you aren’t familiar with dance workouts you may want to preview the workout before actually doing it. If you like to dance this may be a good workout for you. Just be prepared to shake your groove thing. 🙂

Leslie Sansone 5K With A Twist

Looking for a fun, solid cardio workout? Try Leslie Sansone’s 5K With A Twist. I really enjoy this dvd and when I’m on the fence about working out I will reach for this dvd because I enjoy it and I’m sweaty at the end. Probably more importantly, it’s a nice change from walking on the treadmill.

What: One 45-minute aerobic workout that includes several two-minute higher intensity power bursts. This walking workout will take you “3.1” miles and the power bursts include jogging and kicking. The workout is primarily low-impact, except for the power bursts which you can modify if needed. The multi-muscle moves ramps up the calorie burn plus the brisk pace averages 4 to 5 mph keeps your heart rate up.

Why I enjoyed this workout: Leslie is friendly, chatty and motivating. I like the one-on-one with her because she’s not busy “talking” to background exercisers, which after a few workouts become annoying. I like the compound moves that burn extra calories and they also keep the workout interesting.  Her intervals can be challenging, depending on your fitness level. This is a good cardio workout and a good choice if you’re looking for a change of pace.

Grab your water bottle and be prepared to sweat.

Jillian Michaels Hard Body

“Was that a sigh of agony?” You know you’re doing a Jillian Michaels workout when you hear that question. If easy is what you’re looking for then this dvd isn’t the right one for you. But if you’re looking to change up your workout or progress to the next level, these two 45 minute workouts could be what you are looking for.

What: Two 45-minute interval aero/tone workouts that includes six circuits which you do twice. The workouts progress in difficulty but there are modifications if needed. The cardio is mostly high impact and the toning is tough. Jillian’s encouraging, engaging and motivating.

Why I enjoyed this workout: I love that Jillian doesn’t sugarcoat what needs to be done to get into shape. I really enjoy a 45-minute workout, I feel like I’ve done enough to get a good workout but I didn’t have to spend hours doing the workout. I like working several muscle groups at once, it’s a nice change from my other workouts. I liked the variety and challenge of the exercises. What I’m not sure about is how I feel about the DJ, but then again he wasn’t a distraction from the workout. And just as I feel I’m about to die, that there’s nothing left of me to give, I look up at the television and she Jillian smiling and reminding me that I can finish the workout. Priceless.

ACE HIIT Series with Chris Freytag

“You can do anything for 20 seconds.” I’m always looking for an effective, get the job done workout. I also want an instructor who is encouraging, positive and no-nonsense. And with the ACE HIIT Series with Chris Freytag I’ve found the perfect combo and possibly my new favorite workout dvd.

What: Seven workouts in total. Four Tabata workouts and two short toning workouts and a Vinsaya yoga workout. I worked at maximum capacity for 20 seconds, then “rest” for 10 seconds (active rest) which I repeated eight times, before moving on to a different series. The short toning workouts are basic and good for all fitness levels. The cardio is mostly higher-impact, but Chris usually offers a lower-impact option. The toning uses fitness classics like push-ups, lunges and bicycles. The two toning programs are super-basic; the yoga workout combines flowing Vinyasas with static “holds.”

Why I enjoyed this workout: First, I truly enjoyed Chris Freytag as an instructor. Second, the exercises were challenging but not too high-impact. Since I was doing 4 sets in each round of 4 exercises, it can be repetitive but at least I knew what the exercises were and there was no dread factor for any of the exercises. I was challenged so I was having a good time. Chris is friendly, encouraging and easy to follow. She had a big smile for the entire workout and that was awesome.

Firm Ignite Calorie Burn

I’ve been journaling my workouts so that I can better track results. I also recorded when I didn’t workout and what the reason was. For fit and 40 women, working out becomes more than just doing a workout. As our bodies begin to change, we need to be aware of the exercises we are doing and what effect they have on our bodies. we are eating. The journaling also kept me on a schedule and created that consistency that I’ve been missing.

So, I’m back on track with my workouts and I took the time to review my workouts for a 30 day period. One a scale of 1-10, I gave myself an 8 for consistency and a 5 for change. Not much changed physically for me, so that told me that I needed to change my workouts. I needed to step it up. With that information, I ordered three new dvd workouts. And I’m going to share each one with you. I’m starting with a dvd that’s perfect if you’re looking for quick calorie burning exercises at home.

Firm Ignite Calorie Burn

Level: Intermediate

Type of Workout: Aerobic & Toning

Equipment Needed: Hand weights

Instructor(s): Emily Walsh and Rebecca Sturkie, Firm Instructors.

What: Total body workout with two 20 minute interval workouts. The mix of cardio with dumbbell body-sculpting keeps your heart rate but the mini-burst of intense cardio lasts 8 seconds followed by a 12 second recovery period takes the workout up a notch. The workout flows easily as does the cuing by both instructors.

Cardio Power Burst with Emily Welsh: Emily is a ball of energy (sometimes she reminds me of Denise Austion). Her workout combines those high intensity bursts of cardio and toning which promises to to rev up your metabolism which means more calorie burn and fat loss.

Interval Blast with Rebekah Sturkie: Rebekah pushes you to give everything you got. She jams in a lot in 20 minutes, you’ll work every muscle and those 12 seconds will be very much welcomed.

Why I enjoyed this workout: First, it’s a Firm workout. Second, I found the workouts fun, effective, challenging without leaving me feeling beat up. I definitely felt my heartrate increase and I did need those 12 seconds for recovery. These two workouts will be perfect for days when I’m crunched on time but I still want to sweat. So if you’re looking for quick calorie burning exercises at home give this dvd a try.
