Song of 2015

Earlier this month I selected 5 words to define 2015 to me and I’ve been seeing a lot of other bloggers doing something similar. Some have chosen to select one word, others are choosing several words. I think this is a great thing to do. It helps keep us focus on our goals for the year. On the way to work this morning a song came on the radio, a song that I first heard a few weeks ago and immediately downloaded.

On the way to work this morning I heard the song on the radio and right then and there I knew the song would be my Song of 2015. It’s Colbie Caillat’s Try. This song speaks to every woman. The lyrics remind us that we have to love ourselves first and that we are good enough just the way we are.

The song is beautiful and the video is equally beautiful.

Please, No More Cookies

Christmas is all done and that means so is all the food. Thank you! This over-sugared baker is looking forward to a new year that has no sprinkles, almond flavored icing or festive cookie cutters. To be honest, I am completely cookie’d out and I do not want to see another cookie until…well, maybe Ground Hog’s day. If I see on more cookie I am going to lose my mind. I swear, I’m still in a sugar-coma. How is it possible to eat so many of these little things? And to top it off, I was the recipient of two cookie gifts from neighbors. It was a lovely thought but everyone in my life knows I bake hundreds of cookies each December and this means I don’t need any cookies. My hips certainly don’t need anymore cookies. Seriously, I am done with cookies.

As I say goodbye to cookie baking I’d like to share a few photos I snapped as I baked my way through December.

I wasn’t alone during my baking. I had my two little sous chefs watching me and apparently that was an exhausting job.

Susie had a little bed-head action going on when I tried to snap a picture of her sleeping.

Billy had no action going on.

There you have it, my life in December pretty much summed up. What does my post-Christmas cookie life look like? Treadmill, egg whites and salad. 🙂

I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

A Week In Review

This past week I read a great post on How To Double Your Productivity in Five Minutes or Less. The title had me. The post inspired me. I like the timer idea. I admit, I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole a few times (okay, more than a few times) when I’ve visited Pinterest.

Field Trip…
Lets start with the hightlight of last week – the day I spent observing the food photographer for Fine Cooking magazine (I work for the publishing company that publishes the magazine) in hopes of improving my photography skills. It was a great day. I learned and had a snack. 🙂 The Fine Cooking staff made what they do look so effortless but I immediately realized I have a lot to turn. For six photos for a 4 page feature it took ALL day (snacked while working). Thursday was definitely a day well spent and I appreciate their willingness to share with me what they do. Here are some pictures I took of the test kitchen.

When life gives you lemons…
Actually, these lemons came from my critique partner who lives in California. I haven’t decided what I’ll bake. I’m thinking lemon bars.

Speaking of my critique partner…

I have kinda disappeared from blogging in order to finish the first draft of a manuscript. Phew. It’s done and waiting patiently for me to return to it with a fresh set of eyes. In the meantime, I was supposed to write a one page summary for another manuscript but I ended up with a four page synopsis. Woo-hoo!!!

Welcoming a new season…
Spring has finally sprung here in Connecticut and I’ve been busy outside getting ready for planting. I had to trim our ornamental grasses. It’s a good thing I’m in shape. The bigger ones were a handful, I felt like I was wrestling. I love these grasses, they look beautiful in the dead of winter and in the summer but they are a bitch to trim down.

Going old school…
Took a break from errands and yard work for a simple but satisfying grilled cheese sandwich. I’ve been seeing grilled cheese sandwiches everywhere and they’re so gourmet now. I didn’t have time for gourmet so I used American cheese and added slices of tomato. Yummy.

One more picture…
Sunday mornings it’s hard to get out of bed. Apparently today Susie just couldn’t muster up the energy to get up. 🙂

That’s my week in review. How was your week? What are you looking forward to this coming week? Is it hard to get out of the bed on a Sunday?
